The Tile Cost Estimator calculator computes the estimated cost of materials to cover a floor with tile based on the dimensions of the area, dimensions of the tiles and price per tile.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

• (L) Area Length
• (W) Area Width
• (TL) Tile Length (length of one tile)
• (TW) Tile Width (width of one tile)
• (PPT) Price per Tile
• (SM) Safety Margin (default: 10%)

Tile Price Estimate (TC):  The calculator the following:

• (TC) Total Cost in U.S. dollars.
• (nT) Total Number of Tile
• (A) Total Area in square feet
• (PSF) Unit Cost per square foot in U.S. dollars.

The Math / Science

The Tile Price Estimate calculator estimates the cost to cover a rectangular area with rectangular tiles as follows:

1. Compute the total square feet of the area being tiled.
2. Compute the number of tile needed based on the area dimensions of the tile and the safety margin.  The safety margin is a percent number of extra tile to account for partial tiles (cuts) and for broken tiles.
3. Compute the cost based on the number of tile and the cost per tile.
