The Volume of a Triangle Based Pyramid calculator computes the volume (V) of a pyramid with a triangle base that is defined by the length of the three triangle base sides (a,b,c) and height (h) from the base to the apex. /attachments/f12131fe-7582-11e3-84d9-bc764e202424/PyramidtrianglebaseVolume-illustration.png

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (a) Length of side a of the base of the pyramid.
  • (b) Length of side b of the base of the pyramid.
  • (c) Length of side c of the base of the pyramid.
  • (h) Height of the pyramid.  This is the distance between the base and the top.

Pyramid Volume (V): The volume is returned in cubic meters.  However, the user can automatically convert this to any of the other volume units (e.g. cubic feet, liters, or gallons) via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The formula for the volume of a pyramid with a triangle base is:

     V=13ha+b+c2(a+b+c2-a)(a+b+c2-b)(a+b+c2-c)

where:

  • V = volume of pyramid
  • h = height of pyramid
  • a = side length of base
  • b = side length of base
  • c = side length of base
