The Price of Hay or Straw by the Ton calculator computes the price to buy or sell a certain weight of a commodity at a unit price.

INSTRUCTIONS:  Choose units and enter the following:

  • (W) Weight of Hay or Straw.
  • (UP) Unit Price per Ton  (e.g. $78.98 per ton).

Total Cost (TC):  The calculator returns the total price in U.S. dollars (USD).  However, this can be automatically converted into numerous other currencies (see list below) via the pull-down menu next to the answer.

The most current US Hay and Straw Price Survey information data is as follows.  The prices listed are U.S. dollars per ton:

  • Date: 7/17/24
  • State: PA
  • Region: New Holland
    • Alfalfa Price: $195.0 to $320.0
    • Mixed Hay Price: $75.0 to $460.0
    • Timothy Price: $0.0 to $0.0

Market Prices of Bales of Hay.  Since bales come in different sizes and not always sold by the ton, these compute the dollars per bale.

The photo shows first-cut hay after its been cut, tedded, and raked into windrows in preparation for the baler.

The Math / Science

The formula for the Total Cost base on a price per ton is;

   TC  = W • UP

where:

  • TC = Total Cost
  • W = Weight or Mass of product  (e.g. 2.2 tons)
  • UP = Unite Price of product (e.g. $49.50 per ton)
