The Swimming Pool Calculator provide the volume of water and the approximate time to fill swimming pools of three different shapes.  The swimming pool shapes are:

• Round Swimming Pool
• Oval Swimming Pool
• Rectangular Swimming Pool

The Math / Science

The formula for the volume of a circular swimming pool is:

 V = π * (D/2)² * wD

where:

• V = Volume (water capacity) of a round swimming pool
• D = Diameter of the round swimming pool
• wD = Water Depth of in pool

The formula for the capacity of an oval shaped pool is:

V = (π * (W/2)² + W⋅(L-W) )⋅ wD

where:

• V = Water volume (capacity) of oval shaped pool
• L = Length of the pool
• W = Width of the pool
• wD = Water Depth in the pool

The formula for the capacity of an rectangular shaped pool is:

V = L⋅W⋅wD

where:

• V = Water volume (capacity) of a rectangular pool
• L = Length of the pool
• W = Width of the pool
• wD = Water Depth of the pool

The time to fill the pool is based on the range of flow rate for garden hoses of between 9 gallons per minute to 17 gallons per minute.  A default of 12 gallons per minute is provided.  This should be used as an estimate.

The formula for the time to fill a swimming pool is:

T = V / FR

where:

• T = Time to fill the circular pool
• V = Volume Capacity of the pool
• FR = Flow Rate of the garden hose being used.
