The Time as a function of change in velocity, friction and gravity calculator  computes time required to change velocity from v0 to vb due to friction (coefficient μk) under the downward acceleration due to gravity (g).

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (v0)  Initial Velocity.
  • (vb) Final Velocity.
  • (μk) Friction Coefficient
  • (g) Acceleration due to gravity (nominally 9.8 m/s2)

Time from Δv, friction and acceleration due to gravity (Δt): The calculator returns the time in seconds.  However this can be automatically converted in to numerous other time units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The formula for Time from Δv, friction and acceleration due to gravity is

Δt = (vb - v0)/(μk • g).

where:

  • .Δt = Time from Δv, friction and acceleration due to gravity
  • Vb = Final Velocity
  • V0 = Initial Velocity
  • μk = Coefficient of Friction
  • g = Acceleration Due to Gravity
