The Volume of a Tapered Trough calculator computes the volume (capacity) of a tapered trough (trapezoidal shape) based on the dimensions.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (a) Width of Bottom
  • (b) Length of Bottom
  • (A) Width of Top
  • (B) Length of Top
  • (h) Height between Top and Bottom

Trough Volume (V): The calculator returns the volume in gallons.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

A rectangular trapezoid volume has regular trapezoids on all four sides with the two sets of identical trapezoids on opposite sides.  The bottom and top rectangles are centered, form parallel planes and separated by the height.

To compute the volume of contents in a trough, use measurements of the surface of the contents (e.g., water level) for A and B.
