  • [Degrees][Minutes][Seconds]

Decimal Degrees: The calculator returns the number of degrees.  However, this can be automatically converted into other angle units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

Degrees can always be, and in the contemporary world usually are, specified as decimal degrees.  An alternative representation of latitude and longitude are still used which sub-divides a degree into 60 minutes and a minute into 60 seconds.  Thus in this representation a second is `1/3600`th of a degree and `1/60`th of a minute. In turn a minute is `1/60`th of a degree.

Examples

If you enter 5 in the degrees input field and 30 in the minutes input field and leave the seconds input field its default 0, then this equation will show the result as:

`"Degrees" = 5.5^o`  = 5 Deg + `30/60` Deg
