The Density calculator computes the mean density (ρ) of an object based on its mass (M) and volume (V).

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (M) mass of the object
  • (V) volume of the object

Density(ρ):  The calculator computes the mean density in kilograms per cubic meter, grams per cubic centimeter and ounces per cubic inch.  However, these can be automatically converted into other density units via the pull-down menu.

The formula for density is as follows:

where:

  • ? is the density
  • M is mass
  • V is volume

Which is heavier, a ton of bricks or a ton of feathers?  The foolish person reply "the bricks", but the answer is neither.  They are the same weight (mass). HOWEVER, their density is wildly different, because the volume of space to contain a ton of feather is much bigger.  Since volume is in the denominator of this equation, the density of the larger volume (feathers) is much smaller.

Density is temperature and pressure dependent, meaning that a change in temperature or pressure will either increase or decrease the density of a substance.
