The Doppler Effect equation computes the frequency that is observed by someone by using the velocity of the sound waves(v), the observers velocity(v0), the source velocity(vs) and the source frequency(fs).

INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:

  • (v) Velocity of Sound Waves
  • (v0) Observers Velocity
  • (vs) Source Velocity
  • (fs)  Source Frequency

Observers Frequency(fs): The equation returns the frequency in Hertz(Hz) . However, this can be automatically converted to other force units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Doppler Effect equation is used when you want to compute the frequency of what you would hear compared to the actual frequency of a moving vehicle. A good example to look at is an ambulance. In this scenario, the ambulance may be 1500 meters away so the frequency it outputs is a little different than what you hear due to velocity changes relative to your motion, the ambulances motion and the speed of sound.
