This Dipole Moment equation is used to compute the Dipole Moment(p) in an electric field with a uniform charge(q) and distance(d)

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (q) The magnitude of the two charges
  • (d) The distance between the two charges/atoms

Dipole Moment(p): The equation returns the dipole moment(p) of an electric field in Coulomb-Meter's. However, this can be automatically converted to other force units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Dipole Moment equation is used in both Chemistry and Physics. In Chemistry it is primarily used to find the polar nature of a chemical bond. If the dipole moment has a value of zero, then the two atoms are non-polar. If the dipole moment has a number greater than zero, then the two atoms are polar. In Physics the dipole moment affects how a substance responds to an external electric field. It also affects the dielectric constant and the conductivity.

The Dipole Moment equation is a relationship between the magnitude of the two atoms or charges and the distance separated between them:

           p=q•d

where

  • (p) is the dipole moment
  • (q) is the magnitude of the two charges
  • (d) is the distance between the two charges/atoms
