This is an equation for the average ultimate strain in soil layer which can be said to be the shear strength of soil

In this equation, the inputs are:

$Delta e_T0T$ - total change in void ratio due to both re-compression and due to virgin compression, if either exists
$e_O$ - initial void ratio (prior to consolidation)

Both inputs are ratios of voids and so are unit-less inputs
