Strain is the deformation of a solid due to stress. Engineering stress is defined in terms of the change in length of a physical element ( $Delta L$ ) divided by the original length of the physical element ( $L_0$ ).

This equation computes the original length, $L_0$ , knowing the change of length caused by strain.
