Relative Viscosity

The Relative Viscosity calculator computes the relative viscosity between a solution and solvent.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

• (η)  Viscosity of the solution.
• (η_s) Viscosity of the solvent.

Relative Viscosity (η_r): The calculator returns the relevant viscosity as a ratio (real number).  However this can be automatically converted to a percent via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The relative viscosity if the ration of the viscosity of a solution (η) to the viscosity of the solvent (η_s) in that solution.  The formula for Relative Viscosity is:

   η_r = η / η_s 

where:

• η_r = relative viscosity
• η = viscosity of solution
• η_s = viscosity of solvent
