Rectangle Area Fencing

The Rectangle Area Fencing calculator computes the length of the perimeter, area and diagonal length of a rectangle field or area based on the dimensions (length and width). It also computes the number of posts or fence segments based on the length of the segments or separation of the posts.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the follow:

• (L) Length of Field
• (W) Width of Field
• (s) Fence Section Length OR Distance between Posts.

Rectangle Field Perimeter (P):  The calculator returns the perimeter in feet.  It also returns:

• (SF) area in square feet
• (Ac) area in acres
• (Dg) length of the diagonal in feet. 
• (nP) Number of Posts or Fence Sections

All of these values with units can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is:

         P = 2 • L + 2 • W

where:

• P = Perimeter of Rectangle Fence
• L = Length
• W = Width

The formula for the area of a rectangle is simply:

A = L • W

The number of posts are estimated to include corners.  Note: if tension wire fence, there will need to be 16 more posts, four for each corners per the configuration in the diagram below.

• Fence Needed for Circular Area: Computes the area, perimeter and fencing materials needed to enclose a roughly circular area based on the diameter, length of fence segments and the number of rows of rails.  Use this if you know how many segments you have.  Use this if you know the diameter of the area you want.
• Semi-Circle Area Fencing: Computes the fencing materials needed to enclose a roughly semi-circular area based on the diameter, length of fence segments and the number of rows of rails.
• Fencing Needed for Polygon Area: Computes the area and side length enclosed within a polygon (e.g. octagon) shaped area (paddock).
