The vCalc Shear Strain equation computes the strain caused by a displacement of a surface of a volume as shown in the image.  In the image surface A is displaced by a distance x.

The shear strain, γresults from the stress caused by the force F||.

The strain is computed as the ratio of the following:

  • x - the displacement of the surface A.
  • h - the original  transverse (perpendicular to the force, F||) length of the object under stress.
