Gem Specific Gravity

The Specific Gravity of Gems function provides the specific gravity of various gems and minerals.  Note that the specific gravity for Tanzanite is more specifically for Tanzanite (ziosite).

The Math / Science

Specific gravity (specific weight) is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance.  For gems the specific gravity reference substance is water.  Therefore, the formula for Specific Gravity is:

  SG = `gamma / (gamma_W)`

where:

• SG = Specific Gravity
• `gamma` = density of gem
• `gamma_W` = density of water
