This vCalc Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) equation computes an estimated Basal Metabolic Rate based on the empirical calculations of Harris and Benedict.
This particular metabolic estimation method is used to estimate an individual's basal metabolic rate (BMR) and corresponding daily caloric requirement. Internal to the computation, the estimated BMR value is multiplied by a factor for the individuals's activity level.
The resulting number is an estimated recommendation for minimal daily caloric intake that will maintain an individual's current body weight.
BMR for men = 66 + ( 6.2 × weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 × height in inches ) – ( 6.76 × age in years )
BMR women = 655.1 + ( 4.35 × weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 × height in inches ) - ( 4.7 × age in years )
The equation constants are based on the original Harris Benedict experimental data.
Results are in calories/day
The Harris–Benedict equation may be used to estimate potential weight loss. An individual can reduce their caloric intake below the estimated BMR of the equation to lose weight with normal activity.
