The Electric Field calculator computes the electric field intensity based on Coulomb's Constant, the charge, unit length and radius.

INSTRUCTION: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (q) charge
  • (L)  unit length
  • (rA)  radius A

Electric Field (EA): The calculator returns the field strength in Newtons per Coulomb (N/C).

The Math / Science

The Electric Field calculated by this equation computes the electric field intensity at a radial distance rA.  The electric field is calculated using the following formula:

        EA=2kqLrA

where:

  • EA = Electric Field at radial distance rA
  • k= Coulomb's Constant (8.9875517873682E9 m/F) = 14πε0, where ε0 is the permittivity of free space
  • q = charge
  • L = unit length
  • rA = radius A

NOTE:  because L is a "unit length", you must always use the value 1 for L, though you may change its units.
