The Heat Transfer Coefficient calculator computes the overall heat transfer coefficient of a medium, such as a heat exchanger, based on the heat flow rate, transfer area and the temperature difference.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (Q) Heat Energy Flow Rate
  • (A) Surface Area
  • (ΔT) Difference in Temperature

Heat Transfer Coefficient (U): The coefficient is returned in units of W/(m2⋅°C).

The Math / Science

Heat Transfer Coefficient is defined as the ratio of heat lost due to the flow to the product of area and temperature difference. It is used to measure the transfer of heat by convection or in the phase change (generally between fluid and a solid).

U = Q/(A*ΔT)

Where,

  •  h = Heat transfer coefficient, W/(m2⋅K).
  •  Q = Heat Energy Flow Rate, J/s = W
  •  A = Heat Transfer Surface Area, m2
  •  ΔT = Difference in Temperature between the solid surface and surrounding fluid area.
