Angular Velocity Magnitude

|ω|=θt
(θ)Angular Displacement

Tags

The Angular Velocity Magnitude calculator computes the magnitude of the velocity (ω) based on the angular displacement (θ) the elapsed time (t)./attachments/9e9bb470-c55b-11e3-b7aa-bc764e2038f2/Circular Velocity.png     Circular Motion

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose the units and enter the following:

  • (θ) This is the angular displacement
  • (t) This is the elapsed time.

Angular Velocity Magnitude (ω): The calculator returns the velocity in meters per second (m/s).  However this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The formula for Angular Velocity is:

     ω = θ / t

The angular velocity describes the speed of rotation and the orientation of the instantaneous axis about which the rotation occurs.  This equation computes the magnitude of the angular velocity (speed).  The vector orientation of the angular velocity must be specified separately. Angular velocity is measured in radian per second (rad/s).

Notes

In physics, the angular velocity is defined as the rate of change of angular displacement and is a vector quantity (more precisely, a pseudovector) which specifies the angular speed (rotational speed) of an object and the axis about which the object is rotating. This is as shown in figure 1 above.
