Electrostatic Pressure

The Electrostatic Pressure calculator computes the electrostatic pressure based on the electric field (E) and the the electric constant.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

• (E) This is the electric field.

Electrostatic Pressure (P): The calculator returns the pressure in pascals (Pa).  However this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Electrostatic Pressure is a surface charge that experiences a force in the presence of an electric field. This force is the average of the discontinuous electric field at the surface charge. This average in terms of the field just outside the surface is shown in the formula for Electrostatic Pressure:

              P=½•ε₀•E²

where:

• P = Electrostatic Pressure
• ε₀ = electric constant
• E = Electric field
