The Coefficient of Community calculator computes the ratio of the number of species common to two community compared to the total species in both communities.
INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:
- (C) The number of species common to both communities.
- (S) The combined number of unique species in both communities.
Coefficient of Community (CC): The calculator returns the coefficient as a real number.
The Math / Science
The Coefficient of Community (Jaccard Coefficient) is a coefficient that indicates the degree of similarity of two communities based on the number of species that they have in common. The formula for coefficent of community is:
CC = C / S
where:
- CC = Coefficient of Community
- C = the number of species common to both communities
- S = the total number of species found in the two communities
A more common version of the Coefficient of Community (Jaccard Coefficient) is a coefficient that indicates the degree of similarity of two communities based on the number of species that they have in common. The formula for the Coefficient of Community is:
`"CC" = c/(S_1+S_2-c)`
where:
- CC is the Jaccard Coefficient of Community
- S1 is the number of species in community 1
- S2 is the number of species in community 2
- c is the number of species in common between community 1 and community 2
