The Ideal Gas Law for Amount of Substance calculator computes the amount of gas (n),  based on the pressure (P), temperature (T) and volume (V) using the Ideal Gas Law and the universal gas constant (R) .

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (V) Volume
  • (P) Pressure
  • (T) Temperature

Gas Amount (n):  The calculator returns the amount of gas in moles.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The ideal gas law  is the equation of state of a hypothetical ideal gas. It is a good approximation to the behavior of many gases under many conditions.  The ideal gas law is often represented in its common form:

                            PV = nRT

where:

This calculator solves the Ideal Gas Law equation for amount of gas (n).  Where n = PV / RT.
