The Math / Science
A free throw in basketball is an attempt to score points from a designated line on the court, known as the foul-line, while no defenders are allowed to block or interfere with the shot. It is awarded following certain fouls by the opposing team.
When a player is fouled during a shot attempt or when the opposing team commits a certain number of fouls in a quarter or half (depending on the league rules), the fouled player is given the opportunity to shoot unopposed from the free-throw line.
The free-throw line is located 15 feet (4.57 meters) away from the backboard and is parallel to the end lines of the court. Players have ten seconds to shoot the ball once they receive it from the referee for a free throw attempt. Each successful free throw is worth one point. Players usually take two free throws for each shooting foul, unless the foul occurred during a three-point shot attempt, in which case the shooter may get three free throws.
Free throws are crucial in basketball as they offer an uncontested opportunity to score points and can significantly impact the outcome of a game.
- Assists per Game: Enter comma separated values for the number of assists in each game (e.g., 2,4,0,0,4,5,6), and compute the assists per game average, number of games, total assists, fewest assists (min), and most assists (max)
- Turnovers per Game: Enter comma separated values for the number of turnovers in each game (e.g., 2,4,0,0,4,5,6), and compute the turnovers per game average, number of games, total turnovers, fewest turnovers (min), and most turnovers (max).
- Rebounds per Game: Enter comma separated values for the number of defensive rebounds and offensive rebounds in each game (e.g., 2,4,0,0,4,5,6), and compute the rebounds per game average, number of games, total rebounds, fewest rebounds (min), and most rebounds (max), and then the same stats for defensive and offensive rebounds (total, average, min and max).
- Fouls per Game: Enter comma separated values for the number of fouls in each game (e.g., 2,4,0,0,4,5,6), and compute the fouls per game average, number of games, total fouls across all games, fewest fouls (min), and most fouls (max).

- Two Point Shooting Percentage: Compute the percent shooting and total score made on 2 point shots.
- Three Point Shooting Percentage: Compute the percent shooting and total score made on 3s.
- Performance Index Rating: Computes a basketball metric is used by the Euroleague Basketball Company's first and second tier competition, the EuroLeague and the EuroCup. The metric is computed as a function of numerous individual game metrics.
