The Mean Velocity calculator computes the mean velocity (vm) based on two velocities and the duration at those velocities.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (V1) This is the first velocity.
  • (t1) This is the duration of motion at the first velocity.
  • (V2) This is the second velocity.
  • (t2) This is the duration of motion at the second velocity.

Mean Velocity (vm): The calculator computes the final velocity(vm) in meters per second.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math/Science

The formula for the mean velocity is:

      `v_m = (V_1*t_1 + V_2*t_2)/(t_1 + t_2)`

where:

  • vm is the mean velocity
  • V1 is the initial velocity
  • t1 is the time of motion at velocity 1.
  •  V2 is the initial velocity
  • t2 is the time of motion at velocity 2.
