The Junk Silver Coin Value calculator computes current value for Junk Silver based on the number of junk silver dollars, halves, quarters and dimes, the current Silver Spot Price ($30.08 /Troy Ounce) in U.S. dollars and the Junk Silver multiple (0.715).

INSTRUCTIONS:  Enter the following:

  • (SD)  Number of Silver Dollars
  • (HD)  Number of Silver Half Dollars
  • (Q)  Number of Silver Quarters
  • (D)  Number of Silver Dimes

Junk Silver Value (V):  The calculator returns the total value of the coins in U.S. dollars.  However, this can be automatically converted to other currencies via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

Junk silver refers to old U.S. coins that have no collectible or numismatic value beyond their silver content but are valued for the metal itself. These coins were typically minted before 1965 and contain 90% silver. The term "junk" doesn't mean the coins are worthless; it simply indicates they have no special rarity or condition that would make them more valuable to coin collectors.

The most common examples of junk silver are:

  • Dimes, quarters, and half dollars minted before 1965
  • Silver dollars (varieties minted prior to 1935)

Since these coins contain a substantial amount of silver, they are often used by precious metal investors and collectors as a convenient way to accumulate physical silver.

This formula will provide the value of the Junk Silver.  Junk Silver is comprised of U.S. silver coins with no numismatic value.  These are often coins that are very worn and have lost any value outside of the silver content.   These are U.S. coins with dates before 1964 when the U.S. Mint stamped its last coins with .9 silver content.

Example

The Face Value is the sum of the face value of the coins.  If the user had three(3) U.S. quarters and two (2) U.S. dimes, the Face Value would be 3* .25 + 2 *.10 = $.95
