The Weight of Seawater calculator computes the weight (mass) of seawater based on the density of the seawater (saltwater) and the volume.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (V) Volume of Seawater
  • (μD) Density of Seawater

Weight of Seawater (M): The calculator returns the mass in kilograms.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Weight of Sea Water in a pipe is calculated using the dimensions of the pipe (length and diameter) and the of the density of sea water.  The formula for the weight of seawater is:

           M = μD • V

where:

The mass is calculated based on the following equation:

              mass = density • volume

And the mean density of sea water is approximately equal to 1,025 kilograms per cubic meter.
