The Thermal Diffusivity (α) represents the relationship between Thermal Conductivity (κ) and the density of a fluid (ρ) and the fluid's specific heat (cp).  The two terms, ρcp together, is known to be the volumetric heat capacity.  The Thermal Diffusivity is expressed in units of m2sec.

α = κρcp, where in an SI units example:

  • κ is in units of WmK
  • ρ is in units of kgm3 and
  • cp is in units of  JkgK
