Change of Internal Energy

The Change in Internal Energy calculator computes the change in internal energy based on the heat added (Q) and the work done (W).

• (Q) Heat Added to System
• (W) Work Performed by System

Change in Internal Energy (ΔE): The calculator returns the change in energy in Joules.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The change in internal energy of a system is equal to the heat added to the system minus the work done by the system.  The formula for change in internal energy is:

ΔE = Q - W 

where

•     ΔE = change in internal energy
•     Q = heat added to the system
•     W = work done by the system
