The Reduced Specific Volume calculator computes the reduced volume(vr), which is the ratio of the specific volume of a substance to the value of the specific volume at the critical point.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose the preferred units and enter the following parameters.

  • V - the actual measured volume
  • Tcr - the critical temperature point for the substance
  • pc - the critical pressure for the substance

Reduced Specific Volume(vr): The volume (vr) is returned in moles.  However, this can be automatically converted to other volume units via the pull-down menu. The Reduced Specific Volume is computed using the universal gas constant (R) which is 8.3144598(48) (m³ • Pa) / (K• mol).

The Math / Science

The reduced properties of a fluid are a set of state variables normalized by the fluid's state properties at the fluid's critical point.1
The reduced specific volume is the ratio of the specific volume of a substance to the value of the specific volume at the critical point.
