The Surface Temperature calculator computes the ground surface temperature based on the cloud base and the dew point.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (CB) This is the cloud base, the height of the lowest clouds about the ground
  • (DP) This is the dew point

Surface Temperature (ST):  The calculator returns the surface temperature in degrees Celsius.  However, this can be automatically converted compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

This is a basic formula to calculate surface temperature from the elevation of the cloud base (feet) and the dew-point (Celsius).  The formula to calculate surface temperature based on cloud base and dew point is:

   ST = 4.4 C° / 1000 ft • CB + DP
