The Area of a Trapezoid calculator computes /attachments/e6cba4c0-da27-11e2-8e97-bc764e04d25f/TrapezoidArea-illustration.pngthe area of a trapezoid based on the measure of the the top (a) and bottom (b) sides and the height (h).

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (a) Top Length
  • (b) Bottom Length
  • (h) Vertical Distance between top and bottom

Trapezoid Area (A): The calculator returns the area (A) in square meters.  However, this can be automatically converted to other area units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

A trapezoid is a special case of a quadrilateral, four sided polygon, where two non-adjacent sides are parallel (see diagram).

The formula for the area of a trapezoid is:

      A = ½•h•(a+b)

where:

  • A is the area of the trapezoid
  • h is the height
  • a is the length of one parallel side
  • b is the length of the other parallel side

Trapezoid or trapezium, as it's known in the UK,  is a quadrilateral with two parallel sides, shown as the top and bottom in this diagram.  The height of a trapezoid (h) is the perpendicular distance between the two parallel sides.

A trapezoid volume is made of four trapezoids one the sides.
