The Stress calculator computes the stress on the cross section of a member experiencing uniaxial loading.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (P) Loading or force applied
  • (A) Cross-sectional area

Stress (σ): The calculator returns the stress in newtons per square centimeter.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math  / Science

The formula for stress is:

    σ = P / A

where:

  • σ is the stress
  • P is the force of the load
  • A is the cross-section area.
