The Change in Length due to Strain calculator computes the change in length based on an original length and a strain factor.
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:
- (ε) Strain
- (L0) Initial Length
Change in Length from Strain (ΔL): The calculator returns the change in length in millimeters. However this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.
The Math / Science
Strain is the deformation of a solid due to stress. Engineering stress is defined in terms of the change in length of a physical element (ΔL)divided by the original length of the physical element (L0).
The formula for the deformation in change of length caused by strain:
ΔL = L • ε
where:
- ΔL is the change in elongation from strain.
- ε is strain
- L is the initial length
