The Saturation Ratio calculator computes the water saturation ratio of soil.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose the preferred units and enter the following:

  • (Vw) Volume of Water
  • (VV) Volume of Voids

Saturation Ratio (RS): The calculator returns the saturation ratio as a real number rounded to the nearest 1/10,000th.  However, this can be automatically converted to % via the pull-down menu.

Type of snow or ice (kg/m3)
Fresh New snow  50-70
Damp new snow 100-200
Settled snow 200-300
Depth hoar 100-300
Wind packed snow 350-400
Firn   (granular) 400-830
Very wet  700-800
Glacier ice 830-917
Rain/Melt 997

The saturation ratio  RS is the ratio of the water contained in a sample volume to the volume of voids VV and represents the amount of volume that can still absorb more water.  The formula for saturation ratio is:

    RS = Vw / Vv

Notes

In engineering application the saturation ratio indicate how far from saturation the soil is.
