The Dilute Bourbon calculator computes the amount of water you need to add to a quantity of bourbon to dilute its proof to a lesser value.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (Q) Quantity of Bourbon
  • (SP) Starting Proof
  • (EP) End Proof (diluted)

Dilute Bourbon (W): The results are returns amount of water for dilution in milliliters (mL).  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Dilute Bourbon calculator computes the amount of water you need to add to a quantity of bourbon to dilute its proof to a lesser value.  The formula for the amount of water to dilute bourbon to a specific proof is:

`W = Q * ( (SP)/(EP) - 1)`

where:

  • W = Amount of water to add
  • Q = Initial quantity of bourbon
  • SP = Starting Proof
  • EP = End Proof achieved by adding W amount of water.

For instance, if you have 750mL of 140 proof bourbon and you wanted to serve it at 90 proof, you would need to add 440mL of water.

This calculator is dedicated to vCalc's good friend Bill Samuels Jr of Maker's Mark fame.
