The Math / Science

Several formals in the Subwoofer Speaker Calculator are based on the following formula for the Air Compliance of a Subwoofer.  Air compliance refers to the volume of air displaced by the maximum deformation of the speaker membranes. 

The formula for Air Compliance of a subwoofer is:

AC = `(F_b/F_s)^(1/0.31) * V`

where:

  • AC = Air Compliance
  • Fb = Box Enclosure Tuning Frequency
  • Fs = Speaker Resonance Frequency
  • V = Enclosure Volume or Box

This calculator has the above formula solved for:

  • Volume of Enclosure (V) based on the frequencies and air compliance
  • Box Enclosure Tuning Frequency
  • Air Compliance

It also has two helpful geometric formulas, the volume of a box and the length of the diagonal in the box.  Both are useful in the construction of a subwoofer box speaker.
