The Underwater Pressure calculator computes the added pressure exerted underwater by the water column directly overhead as a function of the density of the water, depth under water, and the acceleration due to gravity.
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:
- (d) Depth under Water (Titanic is at 3,700 meters)
- (ρ) Density of Water (default: density of sea water)
Underwater Pressure (p): The calculator returns the pressure in pascals (Pa). However, this can be automatically converted to other pressure units via the pull-down menu.
The Math / Science
The formula for the added pressure underwater is:
where:
- p is the under water hydrostatic pressure
- ρ is the density of water
- g is the acceleration due to gravity
- d is the depth under water or the height of the column of water above
