The Area of a Rectangle calculator computes the area a rectangle based on the width and height.
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:
- (w) Width
- (h) Height
Area of Rectangle (A): The calculator returns the area (A) in square meters. This can be automatically converted to many other area units (e.g. square inches) via the pull-down menu.
The Math / Science
A rectangle is a four sided object where the sides are straight lines and the corners are right angles (90o). A rectangle is a special type of the more general quadrilateral. To compute the area of a quadrilateral,CLICK HERE.
The formula for the area of a rectangle is:
A = b • h
where
- A = Area of Rectangle
- b = width of the base of the rectangle
- h = height of the rectangle
A quadrilateral is a polygon that has four sides, four vertices (corners), and four angles. The sum of the interior angles of any quadrilateral is always 360 degrees. Quadrilaterals can vary widely in shape and properties, including:
- rectangles: squared corners and pairs of equal sides
- squares: squared corners and equal sides
- parallelograms: two sets of parallel sides
- trapezoids: one set of parallel sides
- rhombuses: four equal sides
- kites: two pairs of equal and adjacent sides
