Capacitor q = CV (solved for capacitance)

C=qVC=qV
(V)Potential between plates.(V)Potential between plates.
(q)Magnitude of the Charge.(q)Magnitude of the Charge.

The Capacitance calculator uses the capacitor equation q = CV to solve for capacitance (C).

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (q) This is the magnitude of the charge
  • (V)  This is the potential across the capacitor.

Capacitance (C):  The calculator returns the capacitance in Farads (F).  However this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The capacitor formula solved for capacitance is:

    C = q / V

where

  • q - the magnitude of charge on each plate of the capacitor.
  • C - the "capacitance" of a capacitor, a quality invented for and described by q=CV.
  • V - the magnitude of the change in potential across the capacitor.
