Capacitor q = CV (solved for voltage)

`V = "q" / "C" `
`(C)"The capacitance of the capacitor"`
`(q)"The magnitude of the charge on each plate of the capacitor"`

The Capacitor Potential calculator uses the capacitor equation q = CV to solve for potential  (V).

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (q) This is the magnitude of the charge
  • (C)  This is the capacitance of the capacitor.

Capacitor Potential (V):  The calculator returns the capacitance in Volts (V).  However this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The capacitor formula solved for potential is:

    V = q / C

where

  • q - the magnitude of charge on each plate of the capacitor.
  • C - the "capacitance" of a capacitor, a quality invented for and described by q=CV.
  • V - the magnitude of the change in potential across the capacitor.
