The Coffee to Water Amounts calculator approximates the amount of water or grounds that you need to make a certain amount of coffee. This version of the calculator returns the amount of both coffee grounds and water by volume. If you prefer to measure water and grounds by weight for the best precision you can use the other version:

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose weight units and enter the following:

  • (Total amount of Coffee)  This is the final amount of brewed coffee you want.
  • (Ratio of Water to Coffee)  This is the ratio of water to coffee. For example, 16:1 indicates 16 parts water to one part coffee. Our calculator takes absorption of water by the coffee grounds into account by slightly increasing the amount of water required to make your desired amount of brewed coffee.
  • (Ingredient to solve for)  This is the ingredient (either water or coffee grounds) that you need to make your desired amount of coffee. The default units have been set to milliliters but vCalc offers a large number of compatible units to work with whatever measuring devices you might have.

General Information

To repeatedly make a cup of coffee the just the way you like it you need to know how much grounds to use for that amount of water. If you always make exactly the same size pot then you probably have the amounts memorized. if however, you need to make a smaller or larger amount then usual you might be unsure exactly how much coffee grounds to use to get the same strength of coffee that you are used to. If you want to take the time to work it out the math is not difficult but we have created a calculator to make it faster and easier. The calculator has 7 different ratios of coffee to water from 13:1(stronger) to 19:1(weaker).

If you aren't sure of the ratio that you prefer use our Coffee to Water Ratio calculator to input the amount of coffee and water you use for your perfect cup and find out the ratio so you can apply it to different sized batches.
