The Batting Average Against in baseball calculator computes the statistic that measures a pitcher's ability to prevent hits during official at bats based on the number of hits, batters faced by pitcher, walks, hit batsmen, sacrifice bunts and flies and the number of catcher interferences.
INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:
- (H) Hits
- (BF) Batters faced by pitcher
- (BB) Bases on balls
- (HBP) Hit batsmen
- (SH) Sacrificed hits
- (SF) Sacrificed flies
- (CINT) Catcher's interferences
Batting Average Against (BAA): The calculator returns the statistic.
The Math / Science
The Batting Average Against in baseball is a statistic that measures a pitcher's ability to prevent hits during official at bats. It can alternatively be described as the league's hitters' combined batting average against the pitcher. The Batting Average Against formula is:
`"BAA"=H/(BF-BB-HBP-SH-SF-CINT)`
where:
- BAA = Batting Average Against
- H = number of hits (times reached base because of a batted, fair ball without error by the defense)
- BF = number of batters faced by pitcher (opponents team's total plate appearances)
- BB = number of bases on balls (also called a walk, times pitching four balls, allowing he batter to take first base)
- HBP = number of hit batsmen (times hit a batter with pitch, allowing runner to advance to first base)
- SH = number of sacrificed hits (number of sacrificed bunts which allow runners to advance on the basepaths
- SF = number of sacrificed flies (number of fly balls hit to the outfield which although caught for an out, allow a baserunner to advance)
- CINT = number of catcher's interferences (catcher makes contact with bat)
