The Fielding Independent Pitching calculator computes the pitching metric based on the number of home runs, walks, strike outs and innings pitched.

INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:

  • (HR) Home Runs
  • (BB) Walks (base on balls)
  • (K) Strikeouts
  • (IP) Innings Pitched

Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP): The calculator returns the pitching factor.

The Math / Science

The Fielding Independent Pitching in baseball is a defense-independent pitching statistic to measure a pitcher's effectiveness based only on statistics that do not involve fielders (except the catcher). These include home runs allowed, strikeouts, hit batters, walks, and, more recently, fly ball percentage, ground ball percentage, and (to much a lesser extent) line drive percentage. By focusing on these statistics, which the pitcher has almost total control over, and ignoring what happens once a ball is put in play, which the pitcher has little control over, DIPS can offer a clearer picture of the pitcher's true ability.
The following formula was independently derived by Tom Tango: FIP=13HR+3BB-2KIP, where:

  • HR = number of home runs (hits on which the batter successfully touched all four bases, without the contribution of a fielding error)
  • BB = number of walks (also called base on balls, times pitching four balls, allowing batter to take first base)
  • K = number of strikeouts (number of batters who receive strike three)
  • IP = number of innings pitched (number of outs a team gets while a pitcher is pitching divided by three)
