The Total Average baseball calculator computes the Total Average based on the total number of bases, hits by pitches, walks, stolen bases, at bats, hits, times caught stealing, and the number of double plays.

INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:

  • (TB) Total bases
  • (HBP) Hits by pitch
  • (SB) Stolen bases
  • (BB) Bases on balls (also called a walk)
  • (AB) At bats
  • (H) Hits
  • (CS) Times caught stealing
  • (GIDP) Double plays

Total Average (TA): The calculator returns the total average metric.

The Math / Science

The Total Average is a baseball statistic designed to measure a hitter's overall offensive contributions. The definition of the statistic is simple. A player gets credit for every base he accumulates and a penalty for every out he makes. So a player gets one credit for a single, walk, stolen base or being hit by a pitch; two for a double; three for a triple; and four for a home run. The formula for a player's Total Average is:

TA=TB+HBP+BB+SBAB-H+CS+GIDP

where:

  • TA = Total Average
  • TB = number of total bases (one for a single, two for each double, three for each triple, and four for each home run)
  • HBP = number of hits by pitch (times touch by a pitch and awarded first base)
  • BB = number of bases on balls (also called a walk, hitter not swinging at four pitches called out of the strike zone and awarded first base)
  • SB = number of stolen bases (number of bases advanced by a runner while the ball is in the possession of the defense)
  • AB = number of at bats (plate appearances, not including bases on balls, being hit by pitches, sacrifices, interference, or obstruction)
  • H = number of hits (times reached base because of a batted, fair ball without any error by the defense)
  • CS = number of times caught stealing (times tagged out while attempting to steal a base)
  • GIDP = number of double plays (number of double play groundouts induced)
