The Equivalent Average calculator computes an equivalent average based on the number of hits, total bases, bases on balls, hit by pitches, stolen bases, sacrifice hits and flies, at bats and times caught stealing.

INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:

  • (H) Number of Hits
  • (TB) Total Bases
  • (BB) Base on balls (walks)
  • (HBP) Hit by pitches
  • (SB) Stolen Bases
  • (SH) Sacrifice Hits (bunts)
  • (SF) Sacrifice Flies
  • (AB) At Bats
  • (CS) Times Caught Stealing

Equivalent Average (EqA): The calculator returns the equivalent average as a real number.

The Math / Science

The Equivalent Average is a baseball statistic that expresses the production of hitters in a context independent of park and league effects. It represents a hitter's productivity using the same scale as batting average. Thus, a hitter with a EqA over .300 is a very good hitter, while a hitter with a EqA of.220 or below is poor. An EqA of .260 is defined as league average. This metric validated the notion that minor league hitting statistics can be useful measurement of major league ability. It does this by adjusting a player's raw statistics for park and league effects. The Equivalent Average formula is:

   EqA=H+TB+1.5(BB+HBP)+SB+SH+SFAB+BB+HBP+SH+SF+CS+SB3

where:

  • EqA = Equivalent Average
  • H = number of hits (times reached base because of a batted, fair ball without error by the defense)
  • TB = number of total bases (one for each single, two for each double, three for each triple, and four for each home run)
  • BB = number of base on balls (also called a walk, hitter not swinging at four pitches called out of the strike zone and awarded first base)
  • HBP = number of hit by pitches (times touched by a pitch and awarded first base as a result)
  • SB = number of stolen bases (number of bases advanced by the runner while the ball is in the possession of the defense)
  • SH = number of sacrifice hits (number of sacrifice bunts which allow runners to advance on the basepath)
  • SF = number of sacrifice flies (number of fly balls hit to the outfield which although caught for an out, allow a baserunner to advance)
  • AB = number of at bats (plate appearances, not including base on balls, being hit by pitch, sacrifices, interference, or obstruction)
  • CS = number of times caught stealing (times tagged out while attempting to steal a base)
