Underwater Pressure

The Underwater Pressure calculator computes the added pressure exerted underwater by the water column directly overhead as a function of the density of the water, depth under water, and the acceleration due to gravity.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

• (d)  Depth under Water (Titanic is at 3,700 meters)
• (ρ)  Density of Water (default: density of sea water)

Underwater Pressure (p): The calculator returns the pressure in pascals (Pa).  However, this can be automatically converted to other pressure units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The formula for the added pressure underwater is:

                 p = ρ⋅g⋅d

where:

• p is the under water hydrostatic pressure
• ρ is the density of water
• g is the acceleration due to gravity
• d is the depth under water or the height of the column of water above
