υp=cεr
(εr) Relative permittivity

The Velocity of Propagation calculator computes the speed of signal transmission through a medium relative to the speed of light in a vacuum.

INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:

  • (εr)  Permittivity of Material.

Velocity of Propagation (vp): The calculator returns the velocity in kilometers per second.  However, this can be automatically converted to other velocity units via the pull-down menu.

General Information

In computer technology, the velocity of propagation of an electrical or electromagnetic signal is the speed of transmission through a physical medium such as a coaxial cable or optical fiber.  The formula for Velocity of Propagation is:

  vp=cεr

where:

  • vp = Velocity of Propagation
  • c = Speed of Light
  • ε = Permittivity of Material

Velocity factor, another name for Velocity of Propagation,  equals the reciprocal of the square root of the dielectric constant (relative permittivity) of the material through which the signal passes
