The Voltage Resolution (Analog to Digital) calculator computes the Voltage Resolution (εv) of a measured analog signal over the nominal range [VL , VH], where VL and VH are the low and high end respectively of the nominal voltage range with a specified number of conversion bits.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (VL) Lower Voltage range.
  • (VH) Higher Voltage range.
  • (n) Select Number of conversion bits (4,8,10,12,16)

Voltage Resolution(ξV): The calculator returns the voltage resolution (εv) in millivolts.  However, this can be automatically converted to other electrical potential units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Voltage Resolution (analog to digital) equation is a function of a key design parameter, the number n of conversion bits in the analog to digital (A/D) converter.  The values for n are typically 4, 8,10, 12, or 16. Logically, the value of n can be defined in the range of [0, 2n-1].   The Voltage Resolution formula is:

       ξV = (VH - VL) / 2n

where:

  • ξV = Voltage resolution
  • VH = Higher Voltage Range
  • VL - Lower Voltage Range
  • n - number of conversion bits
