The 2nd Gear Torque equation calculates the torque of a second gear when the torque and number of teeth are known for the first gear and the number of teeth of the second gear is known.
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:
- (τ) Torque of gear 1
- (T1) Teeth in gear 1
- (T2) Teeth in gear 2
Torque Gear 2: The calculator returns the torque in `N*M`. However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.
The Math / Science
The formula for the relationship between interlocked gears and their torque is:
`tau_1 * T_1 = tau_2 * T_2`
The formula for the torque on the second gear is:
`tau_2=tau_1*T_1/T_2`
where:
- `tau_2` is the torque on gear 2
- `tau_1` is the torque on gear 1
- `T_1` is the teeth on gear 1
- `T_2` is the teeth on gear 2
